Warning: spoilers ahead
Bad stuff first:
In the first 600 chapters, Jian Ran is infuriating. She never SAYS what she is thinking or feeling. She never explains herself. It’s incredibly annoying. Even when she regains her memories, she doesn’t tell Qin Yue that it’s his “grandfather” that forced her to have a c-section and made her disappear. Oh, and she suddenly asks Qin Yue for a divorce after going through tons of trials with him and having 3 kids… seriously? She didn’t leave him when she was threatened by Qin Yue’s “grandfather” but she succumbs later? It doesn’t make sense. I do not like her at all. Qin Yue is an awesome character- at first… Later in the book (chapter 600+ and on), Qin Yue becomes the annoying one. Even though Lie saved Qin Yue’s daughter twice from being kidnapped- nearly sacrificing his life, Qin Yue still hates Lie. Qin Yue is petty and annoying throughout the rest of the book.
Also, it’s perverted how Qin’s adopted son keeps a ton of photographs of his little sister LeRan. He’s so obsessed with her that he takes a wife that looks like her. Gross! The whole storyline is disgusting. I quit reading after that particular story.
The English is terrible. It’s hard to keep up because the pronouns are often incorrect. Gender is confused, singular/plural is confused… it’s annoying.
Polaris is so annoying. She never grows up. She’s always fighting with her husband and cussing… grow up!
Other bad stuff: the author is a little redundant explaining the thoughts of each character. She explains too much and doesn’t let the dialogue between characters progress naturally. By the time one character responds to another, I’ve forgotten what the first character said because the author has rambled on too much between the conversation.
The Good: Qin Yue’s character is originally super cool. It’s hard not to like him. He almost always shows up to save the day, he’s a genius, and he’s loyal. Later he becomes weird but at least in the beginning, he’s great.
Big Brother Lie and LeRan are the BEST! They are so so cute and sweet together. She saves his life; he saves her multiple times. But more importantly, they SAY what they are feeling (most the time), and have a good relationship built on mutual understanding (unlike Qin Yue and Jan Ran, who apparently can’t even trust each other enough to tell the other life-saving information)! LeRan is much smarter than Jan Ran. And Lie is much sweeter than Qin Yue. I was very disappointed in the anti-climactic ending to Lie and LeRan’s story. It ends well- they marry, of course. But after all the excitement of Lie faking his death (the first time), the way their story wraps up is a let-down. After going to all that trouble, he just leaves Country A. It’s sweet that he gives everything up to be with LeRan, but it just seems like a waste of a good plot to completely cut Country A out of the story. He never does get to recognize LeRan as his girl in front of the country. And all the sexual tension built up between Lie and LeRan never really comes to fruition. By the time they marry, the storyline has already moved on to other things. It’s sad. Okay, I know I just said a lot of negative stuff about them, but really- Lie and LeRan are so sweet. They are by far my favorite.
Other good things: lots of action! Kidnapping, torture, threats, mind games, mysteries, rape, lost/regained identities, etc. This book definitely keeps you interested. I’ve stopped reading now at chapter 1300-something. It’s just too long, and my favorite characters (Lie and LeRan) aren’t really in the story anymore. Their storyline is wrapped up, so I’m done now.
